The State of Qatar on Thursday presided over a session of the 73rd session of UN General Assembly on appointments to fill vacancies in United Nations organs and subcommittees.

The State of Qatar has underlined that the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territory and the occupied Arab territories, in light of the ongoing Israeli violations, require urgent efforts to reach a radical settlement for the Palestinian issue.

The State of Qatar affirmed its continued support to the brotherly Palestinian people until they enjoy their inalienable rights, as well as its support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to fulfill its important mandate.

The State of Qatar, on behalf of the United Nations General Assembly, has underlined that multilateralism is not a threat to the sovereignty or national interests of Member States and is the only way to address the complex challenges that no country can overcome alone. It calls upon all Member States to reaffirm their commitment to the principles and provisions of the Charter of the United Nations to strengthen international law and maintain international cooperation.

The State of Qatar urged the international community to condemn and reject the measures taken by the siege countries against it, asserting that they were contrary to international obligations to respect and promote human rights.

The State of Qatar chaired a session of the United Nations General Assembly at its seventy-third session, which discussed the annual report of the International Criminal Court.

The State of Qatar has affirmed its support for efforts to facilitate the establishment of International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) to assist in the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for the most serious crimes under International Law committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011.

The State of Qatar renewed its support for the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the peaceful settlement of disputes, affirming its commitment to the role played by the Court in the peaceful settlement of disputes under Article 33 of the United Nations (UN) Charter.

The State of Qatar reiterated the importance of full enjoyment by the Palestinian people of their rights and sovereignty over the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, as well as the enjoyment by the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan of their rights over their natural resources.

The State of Qatar has underlined that the acquisition and development of weapons of mass destruction is a flagrant violation of collective legal and ethical obligations to strengthen security and peace, which is a commitment made by Member States to eliminate weapons of mass destruction and achieve a secure and prosperous world. This is based on its belief in a world of security, peace and stability and free from the threat of the use of weapons of mass destruction.
