Qatar Chairs High-level Meeting on 'Climate and Sustainable Development for All'

New York, March 29 (QNA) - HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, as Vice-Chairperson of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, chaired a meeting on 'Climate and Sustainable Development for All', which was attended by heads of state, government, ministers and representatives of youth organizations. HE Maria Fernanda Espinosa is Chairperson of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly. The meeting, attended by HE UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, focused on the issue of the Protection of the Global Climate for Present and Future Generations of Humankind in the Context of the Economic, Social and Environmental Dimensions of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the synergies between the climate action plan and the sustainable development plan, long-term planning and consideration of generations in the implementation process.


The State of Qatar Affirms Commitment to International Obligations in Combating Financing of Terrorism

Qatar's Permanent Mission Organizes Program for Delegation from QAF, Joaan bin Jassim College

New York, March 28 (QNA) - The Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations organized a program for a delegation of officers from the Qatar Armed Forces (QAF) and members of the joint operations course from the Joaan bin Jassim Joint Command and Staff College. The delegation visited New York City and the United Nations Headquarters. The program included the holding of hearings with a range of senior officials of the General Secretariat of the United Nations. The delegation of the Qatar Armed Forces listened to a lecture by Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary Di Carlo on the objectives and role of the United Nations in the international arena, where she focused on conflict prevention and resolution, stressed the importance of multilateral action and the support of Member States, and commended the support provided by the State of Qatar to the United Nations.


Qatar Emphasizes Importance of Investing in Human Development by Focusing on Education

New York, March 27 (QNA) - The State of Qatar stressed the importance of investing in human development and human resources through a strong focusing on education for girls, boys, women and men, thus contributing to progress in the social and economic development. This came during a lecture delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani at US Military Academy at West Point, at the invitation of Dean of the Academic Board of US Military Academy, West Point Dr. Cindy Jebb.


Qatar and United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism Hold First Strategic Dialogue

New York – Information Office – 20 March: The first strategic dialogue between the State of Qatar and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism was held at United Nations Headquarters. The meeting was chaired by HE Chairman of the National Counterterrorism Committee General Eng. Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al Ansari. The meeting was attended by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, HE Director of Department of International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yousef bin Sultan Laram, and a government academician delegation from Qatar. The meeting was chaired also by the Under-Secretary-General of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office Vladimir Voronkov, and was attended by Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) Michele Coninsx, Assistant Administrator and Director of the Crisis Response Unit, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Asako Okai, and the Coordinator of the Monitoring Team that oversees United Nations Security Council sanctions against ISIS, Al-Qaida, Edmund Fitton-Brown, and officials from UNESCO, Interpol, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Office of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. The strategic dialogue included an exchange of views between the two sides on the global and regional strategic climate and the challenges and threats posed by terrorism, violent extremism leading to terrorism and opportunities for international cooperation to address them. The strategic dialogue held on Tuesday was the second conducted by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism since its establishment in 2017 as the first dialogue was with the European Union.


Qatar Participates Effectively in Sixty-third Session of UN Commission on Status of Women

New York, March 20 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has participated in a strong and effective manner in the work of the sixty-third session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, which began on Monday (March 11th) and is due to end on Friday. The delegation of the State of Qatar was led by HE Minister of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs Yousef bin Mohammed Al Othman Fakhroo. In this regard, the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations organized a number of events on the sidelines of the session, including a High-Level Roundtable on Gender Parity and Security Sector Reform: Promoting Peaceful and Inclusive Societies for Sustainable Development, at the initiative of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar and the delegation of Ghana, who co-chaired by the Group of Friends of Gender Equality in the United Nations and in cooperation with the delegations of Slovakia and South Africa, who co-chaired by the Friends of Security Sector Reform Group. The roundtable discussions assessed options for strengthening linkages between gender equality and security sector reform programs as a means of promoting Goal 16 of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and implementing Security Council resolution 2151 (2014), which calls for "equality in the effective and full participation of women in security sector reform, given the vital role of women in conflict prevention and resolution and peace-building.


Minister of Administrative Development Reviews Steps Taken by Qatar to Empower Women

New York, March 14 (QNA) - HE Minister of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs Yousef bin Mohammed Al Othman Fakhroo reviewed the steps taken by the State of Qatar on the empowerment of women and their relevance to sustainable development before Member States participating in the sixty-third session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, which began its work on Monday in New York. HE Minister of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs, in Qatar's presentation to the Member States participating in the session, stressed that the Government of the State of Qatar paid particular attention to the humanitarian perspective in the formulation of sustainable development strategies as well as in all government programs and policies. In this context, HE referred to the labor market sector strategy and the social protection sector strategy. His Excellency said that the Government of the State of Qatar is keen to ensure gender equality and fair representation of women in the formation of national committees and boards of directors and task forces in ministries and public institutions, indicating that sometimes women lead active ministries and institutions in the state.
