Qatar's UN Delegation Organizes High-Level Session on Children Recruitment, Exploitation by Terrorist Groups

New York, June 07 (QNA) - The Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar and other States organized a high-level session to launch a roadmap for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to address the issue of children recruitment and exploitation by terrorist and violent extremism groups. At the initiative of Qatar's Delegation to the UN, along with the permanent delegations of Japan, Belgium, Nigeria and Canada in addition to the UNODC, a high-level session was held for the launch of the UNODC Roadmap for action to address the children recruitment and exploited by terrorist and violent extremism groups. Held under the theme "Protecting our Future: priority for all" at United Nations Headquarters in New York, The session focused on strengthening prevention and developing strategies to protect and respect the full rights of children as victims of terrorism and violent extremism, regardless of their alleged involvement in the commission of crimes.


The State of Qatar Chairs High-Level Meeting on Regional Organizations in Implementing Crime Prevention

New York 6 June/ Qna: H.E. Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani chaired, in her capacity as Vice-President of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly H.E. Maria Fernanda Espinosa, a General Assembly high-level debate on the role of regional organizations in strengthening and implementing crime prevention initiatives. H.E. the ambassador stressed in her opening speech, on behalf of the President of the General Assembly, on the importance of cooperation between the United Nations and regional and subregional organizations, and the pivotal roles of organizations in crime prevention and criminal justice issues, given the magnitude and complexity of the challenges facing the international community today.


Qatar Urges UN Security Council to Take Decisive Action to Deter Military Escalation in Western Libya

New York, April 29 (QNA) -The State of Qatar has urged the UN Security Council to take decisive action to deter those responsible for the military escalation in western Libya and warned against further slide into chaos and insecurity in western Libya. This came in a statement delivered by HE Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, at the regular meeting of the UN Security Council on "The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question". Her Excellency expressed Qatar's deep concern at the military escalation in western Libya, and said "The State of Qatar is following with great concern the military escalation in western Libya that preceded the convening of the Libyan National Congress, which threatens to undermine the path of the political solution sponsored by the United Nations


Qatar Stresses Continuation of Unjust Blockade is Flagrant Violation of International Law

New York, April 25 (QNA) - The State of Qatar reiterated that the continuation of the unjust blockade imposed almost two years ago, under vague and exposed pretexts to the international community, constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, human rights, and the United Nations (UN) Charter and undermines international cooperation and the international multilateral system. Qatar warned of weakening the multilateral system, which would spread the policy of bullying in international relations, and replace the rule of law with the law of jungle, with the risks and consequences of a terrible price for all. This came in a statement of HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, at the High-level Meeting of the UN General Assembly on the occasion of the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace. Her Excellency said that the continuing and growing challenges of the international community were a growing concern for all, as crises and breaches of international law threatened peace and stability in the world, stressing that the only option for achieving peace and development and protecting human dignity is based on diplomacy and multilateralism.


Qatar Calls on Security Council to Take Decisive Action to End and Prevent Sexual Violence in Conflict

New York, April 24 (QNA) - The State of Qatar, on behalf of the Group of Friends on the Responsibility to Protect, called on the UN Security Council to take decisive action to end and prevent sexual violence in situations of conflict, and urged the Council to better use of sanctions in order to prevent and stop sexual violence. This came in a statement made by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, on behalf of the Group of Friends on the Responsibility to Protect, which is chaired by the State of Qatar in partnership with Denmark, at the High-level Security Council Meeting on "Women, Peace and Security: Sexual Violence in Conflict". HE Sheikha Alya Al-Thani reviewed a strategy to combat sexual violence in conflict, based on strengthening the capacity of national institutions which she said is critical to ensure accountability for these crimes in the past and to prevent and deter such crimes in the future. She called on Member States to take legal and legislative action to address the phenomenon of sexual violence in times of conflict comprehensively.


Qatar Renews Support for International Investigative Mechanism for Crimes Committed in Syria

The State of Qatar has renewed its support for the International Impartial and Independent Mechanism to hold accountable those accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Syria, stressing that sustainable peace in Syria can only be achieved through justice by ensuring accountability. This came in a statement made by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani at the UN General Assembly meeting on the report of the "International Impartial and Independent Mechanism to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011." HE said that the State of Qatar's keenness in the International Impartial and Independent Mechanism stems from its moral and legal responsibility to bring justice to the victims, as well as its keenness to enhance chances of achieving sustainable peace in Syria, which can only be achieved through justice by ensuring accountability.


Qatar Affirms Interest in Promoting, Protecting Human Rights, Developing Labor Laws

New York, April 11 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has affirmed its interest in the promotion and protection of human rights as a strategic option for the State in the provisions and principles of the Constitution and national legislation, which are in line with the international conventions and instruments related to human rights to which the State of Qatar has acceded, and it stressed that it has spared no effort to improve and develop labor laws. This came in a statement delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, at the high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Establishment of the International Labor Organization (ILO). Her Excellency said in line with the State of Qatar's policy to promote human rights, it has spared no effort to improve and develop labor laws, improve living standards and provide a decent life for them, reiterating Qatar's keenness to deal with this issue with transparency that reflects its commitment to international labor standards and expatriate labor who contributed to the process of construction and development witnessed by the State.


Qatar's Permanent Mission to UN Holds High-level Session on Occasion of World Autism Awareness Day

New York, April 05 (QNA) - The Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations organized, together with the Mission of Bangladesh and the US 'Autism Speaks' Association, held a high-level session on the occasion of the World Autism Awareness Day. The session, organized in cooperation with the Sultanate of Oman, the Republic of Belarus, India, Italy, South Korea and the United States at United Nations Headquarters, highlighted practical and effective practices taken by Member States, the United Nations and civil society organizations in dealing with people with autism, in view of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which its objectives can only be achieved by not excluding any member of society, including those with autism and persons with disabilities. It stressed that the goals of sustainable development should contribute to the strengthening of individuals and families affected by autism or other mental health conditions, and focused on actions and practices related to the eradication of poverty, the provision of health services and welfare, quality education and the elimination of inequality.


The State of Qatar Organizes Event on International Sport for Development and Peace Day

New York, April 04 (QNA) - The Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, together with the Permanent Delegation of Monaco, the United Nations Department of Global Communication, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the United Nations Office for Partnerships organized an event on the occasion of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace at the headquarters of the UN in New York. The aim of the event was to celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, which will be after tomorrow Saturday, and to expand awareness of the significant, tangible and positive contribution of sport to the goals of sustainable development. The organizers of the event also sought to inspire influential individuals and sport-related institutions to commit themselves to playing a role in advancing the goals of sustainable development. Qatar Presides over Session of UN General Assembly Condemning Terrorist Attack on Mosques in New Zealand

The General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution condemning terrorism and other acts of violence based on religion or belief.
