Qatar Assumes Co-Chairmanship of Group of Friends of Sport for Development and Peace

New York, June 21 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has been selected as Co-Chair of the Group of Friends of Sport for Development and Peace, jointly with the Principality of Monaco.

Qatar's succeeded Tunisia in the Co-chairmanship of the group, which focused mainly on the great contributions of sport to sustainable development and peace; promoting tolerance and respect and empowering individuals and communities as emphasized in the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan.

HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, affirmed that the State of Qatar, through its co-chairmanship with the Principality of Monaco, will continue to build on the achievements made during Tunisia's term as Co-chair of the group, so that the Group of Friends can remain a common platform for promoting dialogue, exchange of views and information and facilitating and encouraging the integration of sport to achieve the goals and objectives of the United Nations.

The Group of Friends for Sport for Development and Peace was established in 2003 at the initiative of Tunisia and Switzerland.

Selecting Qatar for the Co-Chairmanship of the Group of Friends of Sport for Development and Peace come as an affirmation of its continued efforts in investing sports to create an environment of understanding and to promote cooperation, solidarity and peace at the national, regional and international levels.
