Istanbul/Information Office/23 May 2016/ HE the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alya bint Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani said issues such as natural disasters in the world, deprivation and displacement, bombing and destruction of cities require collective efforts from all in order to develop sustainable ways to ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance, adding that the images of starving children we see on a daily basis can no longer be tolerated.
In her speech before a high-level roundtable on "Political Leadership to Prevent and End Conflicts" in Istanbul, Her Excellency said: "We have worked with our partners to provide necessary humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of civilians, refugees and the displaced," adding "the images we see and the stories we hear are only proof that we need to develop coordination efforts in providing assistance and aid".
HE the Permanent Representative underlined the State of Qatar's call for meeting political and financial commitments and for translating those commitments into action.
Out of Qatar's belief in the role of international mediation as a peaceful means to settle international disputes, the State of Qatar remained an honest broker that maintains the same distance from all parties to the conflict as it has succeeded in many international mediations, HE the Permanent Representative added, citing Qatar's successful experiences in Lebanon, Eritrea, Djibouti and Darfur.
While undertaking the task of mediation, the State of Qatar kept in mind the fifth commitment to highlight the success achieved in the field of conflict prevention by sharing best practices and lessons learned, she said, adding "we look positively to the United Nations efforts to hold world forum on conflict prevention by 2020 in order to determine the way in which the Member States of the United Nations and international organizations can work together more effectively in order to save the region from the scourge and consequences of conflicts".
HE Sheikha Alya said that Qatar attaches great importance to Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals which is dedicated to the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, the provision of access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable institutions at all levels, out of its conviction that building peaceful society is the only way to address the challenges.
She noted that the State of Qatar believes that education is a fundamental and basic tool that helps in bringing peace and solving problems, pointing to Qatar efforts in employing Arab experiences in collaboration with advanced scientific and research institutes in the world to support Doha Institute for Graduate Studies in initiating the science of conflict resolution and humanitarian response in Arabic language through the establishment of the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies.
