New York/ QNA/ 11/16/2021

HE President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid appointed HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani and HE Permanent Representative of Denmark Ambassador Bille Hermann to lead the facilitation of informal negotiations on the reform of the UN Security Council in accordance with General Assembly resolutions calling for reform of the Council in terms of equitable representation, increase in the number of its members and other matters.

This appointment would provide an opportunity for Member States to begin consultations on issues related to Security Council reform in a timely manner.

HE Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani and HE Permanent Representative of Sweden to the UN Ambassador Joanna Monica were previously appointed last year by HE President of the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly Volkan Bozkir to facilitate negotiations and consultations on Security Council reform.

The appointment of HE Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani to this mission comes in recognition of the State of Qatar's role in the United Nations, its belief in the principle of multilateralism, and its keenness to develop the international organization's work mechanisms to achieve its goals, including reforming the work of the Security Council.
