New York, November 19 (QNA) - The Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, at its 74th session, in a resolution adopted by 180 votes out of 193, expressed appreciation for the role of the United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Center for South-West Asia and the Arab Region, based in Doha, in capacity building activities in the field of human rights.
In its resolution submitted by the State of Qatar, the Third UN Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) expressed appreciation for the Center for providing capacity-building activities in civil and political rights, and economic, social and cultural rights including the fields of freedom of opinion and expression, combating hate speech and discrimination, and the prevention of violent extremism.
Prior to the adoption of the resolution, the United States, Turkey, Afghanistan, Australia, El Salvador, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Sudan, Tunisia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Fiji, Ghana, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, and Venezuela joined in its adoption.
Also, the Committee noted the full commitment of the Center to ensuring more effective and efficient implementation of its mandate and welcomed the expansion of its outreach activities to include the Arab League and additional countries in the region, as well as the increasing number of beneficiaries, including youth.
The States, which adopted the resolution, endorsed the role of the Center as a source of expertise at the regional level, stressing the need to meet an increasing number of requests for training and documentation, including in the Arabic language.
Established by General Assembly resolution 60/153 in 2005, the UN Center in Doha is mandated to undertake training and documentation activities in accordance with international human rights standards and to support the efforts of Governments, UN agencies and programs, national human rights institutions, and non-governmental organizations efforts within the region.
