New York – Information Office - October 30

The State of Qatar affirmed its support for the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda at all levels, stressing its commitment to continue to cooperate with all stakeholders at the national, regional and international levels.

This came in a statement delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani at the UN Security Council debate on Women, Peace and Security.

Since the adoption of Security Council resolution 1325 (2000), the State of Qatar has supported the implementation of the agenda of women, peace and security at all levels, Her Excellency said, noting the support for the Global Study on the Implementation of resolution 1325 (2000), which concluded that the involvement of women in peace processes has positive and sustainable effects on the promotion and sustainability of peace and conflict prevention.

She underlined the importance of exerting more efforts to follow up on the implementation of the recommendations of this important study along with all decisions related to the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, which will directly contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

With the looming 20th anniversary of the adoption of resolution 1325 (2000), it is an important opportunity to mobilize global action to implement all aspects of the broad normative framework on women, peace and security, as well as an opportunity to reconsider the approach and take advantage of good practices in this area in order to build on them, identify challenges and ways to overcome them, she added.

She stressed the need to consolidate efforts in the context of the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, and the Youth, Peace and Security Agenda adopted in Security Council resolution 2250 (2015), which for the first time referred to the vital contributions of youth to the sustainability of peace.

Her Excellency highlighted Qatar's hosting of the Second International Symposium on Youth Participation in Mediation Processes 2020, which will focus on the participation of young women in peace processes, both through the theme of the conference and panel discussions, or through observance of gender equality.

In order to unite efforts, the State of Qatar, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the adoption of Security Council resolution 1325, five years since the adoption of Security Council resolution 2250 and 25 years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, will host the Second International Symposium on Youth Participation in Mediation Processes 2020, she said.

Her Excellency said that the State of Qatar, in cooperation with the Office of the Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Youth, is currently preparing for this conference to ensure its effective contribution to the implementation of Security Council resolutions on the ground.

She reiterated Qatar's keenness to translate its commitment to enhancing the role of women in peacemaking into practical action, noting that the State of Qatar, while carrying out an important role in sponsoring the Afghan dialogue to achieve peace and stability, has been keen to involve Afghan women in the Afghan peace talks.

She said that the Afghan Peace Conference, which was successfully held in Doha last July under the joint patronage of the State of Qatar and the Federal Republic of Germany, has witnessed outstanding participation by Afghan women, and in the various groups participating in the conference, including the government, the High Peace Council, civil society and youth.

In conclusion, HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani underlined that the State of Qatar is committed to continue to cooperate with all stakeholders concerned with the Women, Peace and Security Agenda at the national, regional and international levels, and to provide the necessary support to ensure its implementation on the ground and contribute to sustainable peace and security throughout the world.
