Qatar Co-organizes 10th IDSDP Celebration
New York, April 11 (QNA) - The United Nations (UN) departments of Global Communications and Economic and Social Affairs, in partnership with the permanent delegations of the State of Qatar and the Principality of Monaco to the United Nations, organized an event entitled "Scoring for People and the Planet" at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, as part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP).
The event included several key discussions moderated by US sports journalist Tabitha Lipkin, and the participation of Argentine soccer player and vice-president of the Italian Inter Milan FC Javier Zanetti, in addition to a number of sports figures, as well as several UN member states' permanent representatives and other UN representatives.
HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, the Permanent Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Principality of Monaco to the United Nations, participated in a discussion on governments' role in scoring global goals.
In this regard, Her Excellency stressed during her statement that sustainability was at the heart of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 hosting, pointing out that this edition has transformed the way future World Cup editions and other major sporting events will be organized, thanks to the State of Qatar's comprehensive sustainability strategy, considered the first of its kind.
During the event, a recorded speech was shown of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 CEO Nasser Fahad Al Khater who said that the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 was not just a sports tournament, rather a launch of economic, social, and environmental development in the State of Qatar and the region.
Al Khater referred to the edition's social role, highlighting that it was an occasion that saw three female referees manage a World Cup football match for the first time ever. (QNA)
