Qatar Stresses Importance of Adhering to Agreements, Treaties on Disarmament of Nuclear and Mass Destruction Weapons

New York / Information Office / October 13

The State of Qatar stresses the importance of adhering to all agreements and treaties related to disarmament of nuclear and mass destruction weapons in order to reach the goal of freeing the world from threats to humanity, expressing aspiration for all countries to join those agreements and treaties in order to achieve peace and security, and preserve future generations and environmental systems from the danger of proliferation of these weapons.
This came in the statement of the State of Qatar made by the Second Secretary, member of the State of Qatar's delegation participating in the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Amna Abdulrahman Al Sulaiti, before the general debates of the First Committee of the General Assembly on all agenda items relating to "disarmament and international security".
Al Sulaiti warned against the continuation of armed conflicts in many regions of the world, which has become a concern for the international community and poses a threat to the security, safety and stability of societies, calling on the international community to exert more effort to intensify actions and activities that promote disarmament strategies at all levels. She also explained that the proliferation of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction, including chemical and biological weapons, represent a threat to nations and peoples, and violate the human rights of societies.
She expressed Qatar's regret that the Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, held last August, did not reach an agreed upon final document.
She also reiterated that the failure to free the Middle East region of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction remains a matter of concern to all countries in the region, and expressed Qatar's concern about the lack of progress in this regard, in addition to the failure to implement the commitments arising from the outcomes of the 1995 NPT Review Conference, the steps outlined in the 2000 Review Conference, and the 2010 Action Plan, as well as the failure of the 2015 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
Al Sulaiti reiterated Qatar's welcoming of the holding of the United Nations Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, which held its first and second sessions, expressing Qatar's support for the presidency of the Lebanese Republic for the third session of the conference, which will be held in November 2022, and its aspiration for the cooperation of all countries in the region to make the conference a success and to achieve its desired goals in order to promote peace and security at the regional and international levels.
She indicated that during Sept. 12-15 of this year, Doha hosted the first Arab symposium on disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation, organized by Qatar National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons (NCPW), in cooperation with the League of Arab States.
She pointed out that the symposium focused on assessing the multilateral disarmament environment and the future of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and its review process, and considering the issue of freeing the Middle East from nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction.
Al Sulaiti reiterated the State of Qatar's commitment to international mechanisms and measures aimed at disarmament, especially nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction, in order to achieve regional and international peace and security.
