Qatar Chairs UN General Assembly Third Committee Session

The State of Qatar has chaired the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) of the United Nations General Assembly.
Third Secretary of the State of Qatar's Permanent Mission to the United Nations Sheikha Al Maha bint Mubarak Al-Thani chaired the Third Committee session, after the State of Qatar had been elected as Vice-Chair of the Committee for the Asian and Pacific Group of States for the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
The General Assembly assigns to the Third Committee agenda items relating to a range of social, humanitarian affairs and human rights issues that affect peoples all over the world.
An important part of the work of the Committee focuses on the examination of human rights questions, including reports of the special procedures of the Human Rights Council which was established in 2006.
The Committee also discusses questions relating to the advancement of women, the protection of children, indigenous issues, the treatment of refugees, the promotion of fundamental freedoms through the elimination of racism and racial discrimination, and the right to self- determination. The Committee also addresses important social development questions such as issues related to youth, family, ageing, persons with disabilities, crime prevention, criminal justice, and international drug control.
The election of the State of Qatar as Vice-Chair of the Third Committee was in recognition of its commitment to actively contribute to international efforts to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development, and its keenness to adopt an approach based on the protection and promotion of human rights for all segments of society without discrimination during its development march.
The State of Qatar's election is also a recognition of the many measures it has taken at the legislative and executive levels, which have contributed to achieving tangible results in all dimensions of social development without leaving anyone behind, in order to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030.
