BOOSTING OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGHER EDUCATION IN EMERGENCIES

The side event will bring together governments, UN agencies, humanitarian organizations, academia and youth affected by humanitarian crises to promote the role of high-level education in crises situations. As stated in the draft outcome document for the 19th September High-level UN Summit, in crises situations, higher education protects a critical group of young men and women, helps to build self-reliance, fosters inclusion and non-discrimination and provides a foundation for the rebuilding of war-torn societies.
High-level speakers include, among others: H.E. Mr. Augusto Santos Silva, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Portugal; H.E. Mr. Sultan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, State of Qatar; H.E. Mr. António Guterres, former United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; Mr. Pierre Krähenbühl, Commissioner-General of UNRWA; Mr. Volker Türk, Assistant High Commissioner for Protection, UNHCR; Ms. Karen AbuZayd, United Nations Secretary-General Advisor Special Adviser on the Summit on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants; H.E. Mr. Jorge Sampaio, former President of the Portuguese Republic, former UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations; Chairman of the Global Platform for Syrian Students; Dr. Allan Goodman, CEO and President Institute of International Education. The event will be moderated by Ms. Ghida Fakhry, International Broadcast Journalist.
