New York, November 27 (QNA) - The United Nations General Assembly Third Committee adopted, by consensus, the resolution of the "20th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family and Beyond' to implement the objectives of the International Year of the Family, which Qatar facilitated negotiations about it on behalf of the Group of 77 and China in the United Nations.

The Group of 77 expressed special appreciation to the State of Qatar's mission to the United Nations, which over the past years has facilitated consultations on the resolution. Qatar began to introduce the resolution since 2004, after having hosted the Doha International Conference for the Family in that year.

The Third (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) Committee encouraged governments to continue their efforts to implement the goals and follow-up processes of the International Year of the Family and to develop strategies and programs aimed at strengthening national capacities to address national priorities related to family issues as well as to intensify their efforts, in cooperation with relevant stakeholders, to implement those goals, especially in the areas of the fight against poverty and hunger and the insurance of well-being for all at all ages.

It also called on Member States to invest in a variety of family-oriented policies and programmes, as important tools for, inter alia, fighting poverty, social exclusion and inequality, promoting work-family balance and gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls and advancing social integration and inter-generational solidarity, to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Third Committee encouraged Member States to consider the provision of comprehensive, inclusive and quality social protection systems, quality life-long learning for all, health and well-being for all at all ages, full and productive employment, decent work, social insurance, livelihoods and social cohesion, through gender-sensitive and age-sensitive social protection measures, such as providing child maintenance allowance to parents and old-age pension benefits, and ensuring respect for the rights, capacities and responsibilities of all family members.
