Qatar Reiterates Commitment to Implementing UN Declaration and Program of Action on a Culture of Peace

New York, September 13 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has continued its efforts in promoting the values of tolerance and combating extremism, as Qatari institutions, including the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue, continue to promote a culture of peace and capacity building in the field of dialogue and tolerance. The State of Qatar voiced its firm belief that nation-building begins with building human being and cooperation for building a society based on mutual respect and coexistence in harmony and cohesion, and reiterated its commitment to continue to implement the United Nations Declaration and Program of Action on a Culture of Peace. That came in a statement delivered by HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani at the "High-Level Forum on the Culture of Peace" held today by the UN General Assembly. UN Praises Qatar's Efforts in Leading Negotiations to Hold Meeting to Mark 25th Anniversary of World Conference on Women in Beijing

New York, September 12 (QNA) - The United Nations General Assembly Thursday adopted, at its seventy-third session, a resolution in which Qatar played a leading role in facilitating its negotiations, as it decided to hold a one-day high-level meeting to mark the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, which adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Qatar and New Zealand facilitated and led negotiations on the draft resolution before it was adopted. Last June, HE President of the 73rd Session of the General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa appointed HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, and HE Permanent Representative of New Zealand Ambassador Craig John Hawke to facilitate and lead consultations with member states that will lead to a high-level meeting on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women.


Qatar Emphasizes Need for Binding International Instrument to Preserve Information Security

New York, September 10 (QNA) - The State of Qatar underlined the need for a binding international instrument to preserve information security, and standards and norms in the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICTs) in order to reduce risks to international peace, security, and stability, stressing that international law, in particular, the Charter of the United Nations, applied to States' use of ICTs. This was stated in a statement by HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani at the "Open-ended Working Group on developments in the field of information and telecommunications in the context of international security" at the first substantive session of the Group, which began Tuesday at UN Headquarters in New York. HE the Ambassador stated that the State of Qatar has taken measures to harness the latest technologies at the legislative, regulatory and executive levels to preserve information security. The State of Qatar has adopted a comprehensive approach that is guided by relevant international initiatives and takes into account the security of information assets and the security of individuals who use them, she said.


Qatar Presides over Pledging Conference for UNRWA

New York, June 26 (QNA) - The State of Qatar chaired the pledging conference for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani presided over the conference on behalf of HE President of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa. The conference was called for by the Ad Hoc Committee of the General Assembly for the Announcement of Voluntary Contributions to UNRWA. HE UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krahenbuhl attended the conference. Krahenbuhl urged to support UNRWA to provide services to 5.4 million refugees, provide 8 million medical visits per year and provide emergency relief to 1.5 million people. The State of Qatar reiterates that it will remain at the forefront of the countries that can be trusted with the various partners in providing humanitarian assistance to the brotherly Palestinian people.


UN General Assembly Chooses State of Qatar to Facilitate High-Level Meeting on 25th Anniversary of Fourth World Conference on Women

New York, June 26 (QNA) - The United Nations General Assembly chose HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani and HE Permanent Representative of New Zealand Ambassador Craig John Hawke to facilitate and lead consultations with Member States that will lead to a high-level meeting on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women. The 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, which adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPFA), is set to coincide with the 75th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2020.


UN Counter-Terrorism Office, ICSS Sign Agreement to Strengthen Security of Large Sporting Events

New York, June 24 (QNA) -- The United Nations Office for Combating Terrorism and the International Center for Sports Security (ICSS) today signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation in the prevention and control of terrorism and to protect vulnerable targets in the context of major sporting events. The agreement was co- signed by Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office Vladimir Voronkov, and the Chairman and CEO of the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS) Mohammed Hanzab, in the presence of HE Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations.


Qatar's Candidate "Dr. Sheikha Abdullah Al-Misnad" Elected As Member of Committee on Elimination of Racial Discrimination

New York, June 21 (QNA) - The States Parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination have elected the candidate of the State of Qatar, HE Dr. Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad for the membership of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by an overwhelming majority where she received 132 votes from a group of 180 votes to the States parties to the Convention. Dr. Sheikha Abdulla Al-Missned has been elected at 28th Meeting of the States Parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination held today at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Dr. Al-Misnad was elected among 14 candidates to fill nine seats for the Committee, which begins in January 2020.


Qatar, UN Discuss Arrangements of Doha's Hosting of 5th Conference on Least Developed Countries

New York, June 21 (QNA) - HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani met here on Friday with HE Fekitamoeloa Katoa 'Utoikamanu the UN Under Secretary-General and The United Nations High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States to discuss the arrangements related to Doha's hosting of the UN Fifth Conference on Least Developed Countries slated for 2021 in the State of Qatar. During the meeting, HE the Ambassador welcomed the decision adopted by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, in which the Council expressed appreciation for the generous offer by the Government of the State of Qatar to host the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries in 2021.


Qatar Assumes Co-Chairmanship of Group of Friends of Sport for Development and Peace

New York, June 21 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has been selected as Co-Chair of the Group of Friends of Sport for Development and Peace, jointly with the Principality of Monaco. Qatar's succeeded Tunisia in the Co-chairmanship of the group, which focused mainly on the great contributions of sport to sustainable development and peace; promoting tolerance and respect and empowering individuals and communities as emphasized in the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan. HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, affirmed that the State of Qatar, through its co-chairmanship with the Principality of Monaco, will continue to build on the achievements made during Tunisia's term as Co-chair of the group, so that the Group of Friends can remain a common platform for promoting dialogue, exchange of views and information and facilitating and encouraging the integration of sport to achieve the goals and objectives of the United Nations.


Qatar UN Delegation Organizes Panel Discussion on How Technology Can Help People With Autism

New York, June 14 (QNA) - The Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations has organized, in partnership with the Shafallah Center; Mada Center for Assistive Technology; the Health and Human Technology Department at the Faculty of Engineering and Science at Hamad Bin Khalifa University; and the Qatar Foundation for Social Work , a panel discussion on how technology can help people with autism, on the sidelines of the 12 session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The State of Qatar had a significant and effective presence in the session, which was held at United Nations Headquarters in New York (11-13 June).
